Cinema Novo was a new wave film movement in Brazil between the 1950s and the early 1970s. The movement often mixed folk and avant-garde forms with tropicalism, a blend of the cultural forms of Latin American Catholicism with those of the African religions transplanted to the continent by slavery. It was a critical and theoretical study on the relationship between politics and aesthetics in cinema.
